The aim of this survey was it to improve the ionomer´s distribution in the catalyst layer by functionalizing carbon support which increases the performance of a fuel cell. To do so, Vulcan carbon was functionalized with NH2-groups in two different steps. The two steps are called oxidation and reduction. After that the actual catalyst, i.e. platinum particles, was placed on the carbon. In the end the electrodes were manufactured using the functionalized carbon with the platinum particles on it. To check the distribution of the ionomer and the change of the effectiveness a Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) measurement, a transmission electron microscopy (TEM), a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a cyclic voltammetry was done.
